Wet Weather Woes Having got rid of the snow, we are straight back to the wet and these conditions ensure that we appreciate the sunny mornings when they come around. Exercising the horses and splashing through mud and puddles whilst getting soaked through certainly requires a good amount of dedication and all of the owners really appreciate the efforts of all of the team at the yard who provide the horses with great care, whatever the weather. There are almost daily racing abandonments due to waterlogging at the moment and sometimes it seems like we are stuck in a cycle of making an entry for a horse, waiting for the meeting to be abandoned and then starting again. Fingers-crossed that some warmer and drier conditions are around the corner. It does seem likely that the 2021 Cheltenham Festival will take place behind closed doors or with very limited attendance and it remains to be seen whether things will be any better for the Aintree and Punchestown Festivals that follow in the weeks after Cheltenham. The atmosphere that these big festivals generate is enormous and they also deliver valuable income for the sport and the absence of both will leave a big hole this year. Despite this, we need to be grateful that racing has been able to carry on behind closed doors and thanks to the great TV coverage provided by ITV Racing, Racing TV and Skysports Racing, most racing fans will still be looking forward to the next few weeks with great anticipation. Before then, let’s hope that the weather lets up and we get plenty of jumps action as there are plenty of horses at the yard that will appreciate the opportunity to get back onto the racecourse.
